Barton Hills Maintenance Corporation was formed in 1922 as a not-for-profit homeowners’ association. Today, BHMC comprises most of the 140 households in Barton Hills Village in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
We strive to enhance the wonderful natural beauty of the property (parks, waterfront, and private roads) as laid out by our founders while ensuring that the architectural integrity and building aesthetics are upheld to the highest standard.

Monthly meetings
BHMC Board of Directors (nine elected) meet monthly on the first Tuesday at 6pm via zoom (except for holiday weeks e.g. January, July, September which we usually move to second Tuesday.)
BHMC directors provide oversight of the following:
Maintaining property owned by BHMC shareholders, as well as allocating payment of all appropriate taxes and obligations on these properties.
Applying deed restrictions and architectural review of homeowner property improvements including required approval of new construction/structures, changes or additions to the exterior of existing structures, and associated landscape plans.
Maintaining all shareholder-owned roadways and shoulders.
Enforcing the privacy of any BHMC-owned properties from use by non-residents.
Cooperating with Barton Hills Village trustees and staff in areas of mutual concern/benefit for all residents and shareholders.
All shareholders are welcome and encouraged to join. Contact the village clerk for details including opportunities to serve on project committees and other special project.
We are your neighbors. We are your friends. We are volunteers dedicated and passionate community members who take great care to uphold our shared ideals, provide resources, and maintain the architectural integrity of Barton Hills.
Meeting Minutes are retained in Google Drive accessible only to shareholders. To view them, follow the instructions at the link above or visit the Village Hall for physical copies or to work thru technical issues with the clerk.
adapted to today's modern needs, drive most design and build approvals. These Seven S's of Olmsted Design are:
Scenery: Enhanced sense of space, indefinite boundaries, constant opening of new views. Avoidance of formalized planting and decorative structures.
Suitability: Respect for natural scenery and topography; full utilization of the “genius of the place.”
Style: Specific styles for a particular effect. Pastoral — open greenspace, small bodies of water and scattered trees to soothe the eye and restore the spirit. Picturesque — profuse planting, especially with shrubs, creepers and ground cover, on steep and broken terrain, to convey the richness of nature, effects of light and shade and a sense of mystery.
Subordination: Subordination of all elements, features and objects, to the overall design and effect. “Art to conceal Art.”
Separation: Separation of space for different purposes to ensure safety and reduce distractions.
Sanitation: Provision for drainage and other engineering considerations. Incorporation of features to promote users’ physical and mental health.
Service: Attention to fundamental social and psychological needs.”So long as considerations of utility are neglected or overridden by considerations of ornament, there will be no true Art.”
BHMC shareholder are the largest landowner within the Village. Our 86 acres include two large parcels bordering Barton Shore Drive near the Lower Gate entrance, 46 acres in the northeast of the community (once referred to as “The North 40”), three parks, and our beautiful shoreline which parallels Barton Shore Drive from just west of Underdown Road all the way to Spring Valley Road.
